Margin = profit ÷ selling price. Markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost. Prices are before sales tax.
Margin versus markup
A 50% markup is not a 50% margin. If something costs ₹100 and sells for ₹150, the markup is 50% (profit as a share of cost) but the margin is 33% (profit as a share of price). Price from margin, so fees and discounts don’t eat your profit.
Questions
How do I calculate selling price from margin?
Price = cost ÷ (1 − target margin − fee rate). For a cost of 100 and a 30% margin with no fees, the price is 100 ÷ 0.7 ≈ 142.86.
What is a good margin for imported products?
It varies by sector and channel. Resellers often need enough margin to cover returns, marketing and slow-moving stock, so include those costs before setting a target.
